The reason Jesus came when he did was that these Jewish Leaders were denying access to God, to many segments of the population and their hearts were filled with greed, lust for power, and a Savior was needed first for the Jews, then the Gentiles. Why do you think the priests, scribes, elders did not answer Jesus?

Why were the chief priests and scribes angry, what was it that Jesus said? The chief priests and scribes were angry because Jesus' parable was referring to them. He was comparing them to stonebuilders who would be crushed to death building stones, such as they for rejecting Jesus' teachings.

Why do you think the priests, scribes, elders did not answer Jesus? The scribes did not answer Jesus because they were afraid of being caught in the trap of admitting that the baptism of John WAS from heaven or being stoned to death for denying it. Neither response would benefit them so they chose not to respond at all.
