Why do you think the priests, scribes, elders did not answer Jesus?

FEAR! You see, the Sanhedrin wanted to trick Jesus. If he would have said ,by God's authority that would have been blasphemy to them. So Jesus asked them a question about where the baptism of John came from. They didn't answer Jesus because first of all they trying to keep the status quo and the people believed that John was a prophet, so if they said from men they could have gotten stoned to death. They didn't anwer Jesus, so he didn't answer them.

The temple belongs to Jesus. It is a holy, sacred house empty of sin-or should be. Inside the temple is where holy work is done, where one draws closer to God and communicates with Him through Jesus. Not unlike our bodies which are temples, belonging to God. Our bodies house the Holy Spirit, our spirit, and soul. So what we allow in our bodies should be pure because there resides holiness. Also, many churches are now subscribing to the notion that the Lord's house needs to be big and elaborate, costing millions to build and maintain. Then they offer programs such as; weight loss programs, financial counseling, marital seminars, etc...and they charge for these programs. Contemporary den of thieves.
