I think compassion is spontenous reaction and feelings of the sufferings of others which stir in you a drive to come into action to eleviate sufferings or to help others overcome their miseries.

Jew remained under foreign domination for a long period and desired political freedom and spiritual renewal or were waiting for a Mesiah who could help them They believed in one God contrary to non-jews who worshipped many gods. Christ being a jew claiming to be son of God was something Jews felt a threat to their belief of one God.
