 | Why does Jesus place commandments to actively love above commandments to refrain from evil (thou shall notâ€Â¦)? Note: Jesus answered with two quotations from the Jewish law about loving God (Deuteronomy 6:4), and about loving neighbors (Leviticus 19:18). |
Because in loving God with all your being, you are at the same time forsaking all others, including SIN and EVIL. You cannot love two beings at the same time and with the same fervor. Therefore if you love God with all your heart, then you can not love Satan, evil and sin. However, the 2nd commandment of love includes other human beings. Let us face it, we love ourselves the most in this world. Everything we do is for our self and our pleasure. God says that we must love our neighbors, brethren and other people the same way as we love ourselves. We feed ourselves when we are hungry. We should to the same to others, especially our enemies, albeit however difficult it is. God loved us so much that he sent his only Son to die for our sins, and God forgave us our sins no matter who or what we are. He looks way past and beyond whether we are good or not, whole or lame, blind, rich or poor - He loves us all equally. We should do the same to others.
