What role, if any, do people play in growing the field of God

A very basic example is as parents we plant seeds of values and love to our children and hopefully, our children will plant and sow the very same seeds to their children. As Christians, we must also sow the seeds of God's word to our descendants and family, and friends and other people. We may never see how the harvest turns out in the later generations, but we know that as we have sown the seeds of God's love, He will take care of the rest that we may never be able to be witness to.

Yes, Our big role or responsibility is to spread the good news in this world, to let others know the words of God so that whoever repent and believed to Jesus will achieve the God's Kingdom.

Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

Physical and emotional pain must be included in Jesus' penalty for "sin", not only spiritual separation, for mankind to fully understand the love of God for us and the cost Jesus has to pay to save us from eternal damnation. Since Jesus became a man, all the pain and sufferings a man can bear, He must also experience, for mankind to fully emphatize and sympathize with His sufferings, all because of His love for us and to give us example of obedience to His Father's will.
