What was there about Jesus` message caused so many of His disciples to turn away?

This was a shocking message, to eat flesh and drink blood sounded cannibalistic. The idea of drinking of any blood, let alone human blood, was repugnant to the religious leaders because the law forbade it (Leviticus 17:10,11). Jesus was not talking about literal blood, of course. He was saying that his life had to become their own, but they could not accept this concept. The apostle Paul later used the body and blood imagery in talking about communion. (see 1 Cor 11:23-26).

How does one, in our current day eat the flesh of Jesus and drink His blood?

for me by accepting Him as your Lord and saviour. if you surrender and depend only to Jesus you are eating His flesh and blood for by His words you will live. "Seek Ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all this thing shall be given unto you".

How does one, in our current day eat the flesh of Jesus and drink His blood?

Thru the Holy Communion. And i believe reading the Bible, reading God's words and really believing in God, in Jesus, is also another way. Because Jesus said He is the bread of life and whoever comes to Him shall never be hungry nor thirsty.
