How can one find spiritual blessing by going through mourning, suffering, hunger or poverty?

We tend to reach and call out to God more when we are hungry, in pain and in want. Whereas, when we are filled, pyscially well and successful in our jobs and careers, we tend to forget that all these blessings came from Him and we think of ourselves as invincible and not needing God. Sad to say, I was once like that, until God struck me with pain by way of a disabling disease and took away my worldly posessions and "friends." It was a crippling blow not only to my ego but to my physical being as well. That was the time I called out to God. I had always been a lukewarm or casual Christian, raised in the faith, practiced nothing and refused to acknowledge God for all the blessings I had received before. BY the suffering He sent my way, I called to Him, my faith was strengthened and I changed my attitude towards worldly posessions and life itself. Now I only want to get to know Him more and fortify my trust and faith. That in itself I believe, is a spiritual blessing.
