Quoting John 3:16 is the most appropriate scripture. What are we that God should be so mindful of us and love us(sinners). But his love for us is so immeasurable that he has explained it all in John 3:16.

What a Great God we have and What a Great God we have to Praise.

Praise God oh my soul.All my being praise your Holy Name. 

God so loved that world that he gave his only Son that who so may believe on him will have eternal life. Jesus loved the poor and the broken hearted. the poor are like the lost sheep. Just as the shepherd would leave the rest of the flock who are well and secure and go after the lost(sheep)one.So is Jesus our Shepherd. The bible clearly tell us in many instances that Jesus healed the sick and most of the time Jesus was among the poor and needy. He loved the others as well, but was more for the lowly.  I think Matthew 5 explains it. Another example was of a rich man who wanted to follow Jesus but was upset when Jesus told him to leave his belongings.  Jesus knows that the poor , they need a comforter, more than comfort. Also one does not have to be literally poor. Example a rich man may have all the things of this world his money can buy, but if he has some deadly disease that has no cure and his money is helpless, he is poor because he cant afford his health back. Its only Jesus that can help that man who is lowly at that hour waiting for help.
