Why did Jesus? penalty for sin need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

I think Jesus needed to include physical and emotional pain to show us that God loved us so much that He sent His only son to die for ours sins and suffer to death. The physical and emotional pain was for us to see His great and amazing love.

Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?)

Jesus did not try to incite his death. He came to die for us and pay the price of our sins. He knew He was going to suffer a lot and He knew what`s going to happen but that`s how much He loved us. He loved us till death.

With whom does Jesus feel a stronger relationship than even his blood relationships (family)?

anyone who believes in God is a brother of jesus, be he a blood relative or not.and in the same way he would reject a true blood relative who does not accept God
