Jesus knew that His forgiveness and love on Peter would transform Peter to a great leader one day. Peter not only became the leader of the early church, but fearlessly preached the gospel and wrote two epistles in which he revealed the painful lessons he had learned. Jesus knew all this in advance, therefore he invested so much in Peter.
