Darkness came to show that the wrath of God was poured upon the son of God. The veil was torn into two because in earlier days, the holy place was divided by a veil from the most holy place. Only the High Priests could enter into that place. In fact, a High Priest acted as a mediator between man and God. The tearing of the veil symbolises that there is no division hereafter. That is, a permanent link of God's presence to man and man has a direct link to God through the death of Christ. It tells us that there is no need of mediator between God and man hereafter.
