Yes, Jesus was trying to incite his death. Though Jesus had told his disciples and others that he would die and would be risen from the dead, there were many, including religious leaders who did not believe him. His death proved them that he is God. Before he died he wanted to prove the jewish leaders that they were wrong in theier teachings.

Why is it signficant that Jesus fulfilled what was predicted hundreds of years before? Note: Mark refers to the old Scriptures from the Prophet Isaiah (chapter 53) "He poured out his soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And he bore the sins of many." Isaiah 53 contains many more matches to events in Jesus` life.
