Define "Salvation" ? Note how Zachariah (the father of John the Baptist) praises God for fulfilling an old promise (oath/covenant) that "we...should serve him (God) without fear, In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life."

To define Salvation, we have to go through the Bible inorder to define what salvation is. However, Luke 1: 69 stated; and hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David. Horn of salvation would mean "A MIGHTY DELIVERER" Horn is an old Testament symbol for power. see 2nd Samuel 22:3 which says, The GOD of my rock, in HIM will I trust.: He is my shield , and The Horn of my Salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my savior; thou savest me from violence, which JESUS did when HE was crucified on the cross were HE defeated satan, and "SAVED" us from our sins.

What do people think about John the Baptist even before he is born? Note: Sometimes a big introduction is given for a person who then introduces someone even more important. Luke is announcing the announcer of Jesus.

What the people thought about John the Baptist even before he was born, is that they "FEARED". The working of GOD produced a unique sensation among a people WHERE not even a prophet had spoken for centuries. Luke 1: 65-66 stated,and Fear came.

What did Mary understand about who was in her womb before the birth of Jesus?

This passage is called "The Magnificat". Mary understood that She will find herself with a child through no human agency, conceived by GOD, JESUS would be of sinless nature, and JESUS' coming was the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises.
