Why did Jesus instruct his followers to react passively when attacked?

It is an instruction given by Jesus to situations in general so that we can in turn refresh our outlook on life and focus our energies on something other than anger.  If one reacts passively, it is helping yourself from the source of where negative emotions usually arise.  We should remain perspective on a situation and not allow our state be controlled by anger.

Still, there are situations which call out for defense.  There are situations where we must give answers or explain ouselves.  It's not that we must put all our inner self and emotions (good or bad) altogether in a closet.  Else, it becomes playing out the victims everytime someone is against us.  Example:  If someone should fairly enough criticize me for a wrongdoing, and it happens that I don't like it; should I deceive myself seeing that as an attack, and eventually play out the passive victim?  It wouldn't make any sense at all.  We must not react by staying in a couch for the sake of our safety shield from others, but we must react diligently.

How is gazing with lust like adultery?

Like all thoughts, evil thoughts come from the heart, and there, our hearts can turn deceitful.  It's a good gift to lust for your man/woman, however, like any good gift Satan is quick to turn it into something pervert that God did not intend for our own destiny.  Because unrestrained lust leads to a general chaos.  Satan is also the bombardement of the media which pollutes the idea of God, most especially trough pornography and also constant subtle wrong messages.

We can all be victims.  If we fall, rather than excuse ourselves we must seek to be embraced by Jesus from repenting.  Wrong lust damns us, so we must flee with determination from it and break free.  If we ask, Jesus will help us instead to look with love, with purity; THAT'S HOW JESUS LOOKS.

In what ways are Jesus` followers salt and light to the world?

Each one of us who recognize Him as our Lord, has a primary calling; that is to be the light and salt to the world.

In what ways?  God asks from us to do our role heartily, as to the Lord more than to the man (for showing off).  As we try to navigate in troubled waters, one sure way to keep away from the Christian challenges is to isolate, a direction taken in the extreme by those who join monastic life.  Such an approach may indeed keep us seperated from the messy world around us.  But our isolation will rob others of the witness of a Spirit-filled follower of Jesus.  Wouldn't that be selfish?  Jesus modeled and instructed an approach that didn't isolate.  In John 17:15 Jesus prayed for His disciples to the Holy Father: "I do not pray that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one".  There He instructed His followers to be the salt of the earth.  Salt has cleansing, flavouring and preservative qualities, but does no good if it is confined to a box.

Therefore let us be the bearers of light to those who  are in need of such a light in their lives.  And seek no merit from man but only from God, out of the love for Him; after all it's the light of God that flows trough you to others, and it's not for you to keep.
