Health-Injury: How has Jesus helped you
I found out before Christmas of 2008 that I had cancer. Instead of feeling sorry for myself I decided to enjoy the holiday with my family and close friends. My chemo started January 2, 2009 and radiation followed the Monday after. I have had two surgical procedures as well. Every day driving to my therapy I would think of Jesus and ask Him to be with me. I also would pray to God that His Will be done onto me. I found great comfort in doing this. So far to date I am now cancer free. Amen

He took me out of a life of drugs and showed me what was really important. I have a illness right now that is serious and Jesus is giving me the strength to get through it everyday. He also shows me ways to take it one day at a time.

Hey group, I’m enjoying reading everyone’s stuff. My husband went through a time not too long ago when he had surgery and out of work for a couple of months. Our insurance wasn’t enough to cover it and we weren’t sure that he wasn’t going to need more surgeries later. I had fears that maybe he was going to be permanently disabled to the point that he couldn’t work. You know how it is when your fears kick in and take over. Before long the mole hill becomes a mountain. When there was nothing else that I could do other than pray, I prayed. I felt a nearness to God that I hadn’t felt in a long time. I had to deal with the issue of whether God wanted my husband to be healed. When I read through the Bible during that time, I always saw that Jesus wanted to heal every person he encountered. The Bible goes on to tell us that Jesus is the exact representation of the Father. So, if Jesus was always willing to heal every person he encountered, I believe that that was what God wanted for my husband. There certainly are people who don’t get healed and I don’t understand why but I do believe God’s heart is that everyone is healed. So, I prayed believing this to be true and the doctor’s reports were nothing short of miraculous. His surgery went better than expected and he recovered and was back to work quicker than anyone expected. It was a trying time but it really served to strengthen my faith in God and the power of prayer.

One of my questions is if there is a good God who created everything and Jesus is who he said he was, why are there so many diseases and birth defects? I have thought this seems to be a big contradiction. What I read about Jesus tells me that he loved people and healed everyone he met with diseases. This makes room for me to think that maybe God sees the bigger picture and uses healthy problems for good. Jesus turned bad things into good and I believe God has taken bad things in my life and turned them into good. So, perhaps God is good despite diseases and illnesses. Perhaps Jesus is God because his behavior seems consistent with what I’ve seen God do in my life. I am still trying to get more understanding of such things. I would like to know what others think about this.

I can tell you about my experiences. I love to golf as often as I can. But, my back goes out on me at times without notice. Some years ago I went out for 18 holes and didn’t warm up first. It was cool out and when I got up to the a par 5 hole, I hit it really hard and threw out my back. I was in bed for days and had to miss my classes. For months afterwards, I didn’t play at all. I was scared that it was going to happen again. I thought about giving up the sport and yet I get so much of my enjoyment of nature when I’m out playing.

I talked it out with a friend and mentor who has a lot of wisdom. After answering some of his questions I realized that I was feeling accusation that maybe golfing was a waste of time and something that God didn’t want me to do. I realized that I believed that God didn’t really want me to enjoy doing something that didn’t produce anything meaningful. I felt guilty for enjoying something other than God. I realized that deep inside I thought my back went out because God was punishing me for enjoying golfing. But, my mentor helped me realize that God created me in His image with likes and tastes because He wants me to be a unique expression of Him. I am being myself and God enjoys that. When I’m enjoying golfing, God is enjoying me enjoying golfing. In those times I am expressing a part of Him and worshipping Him in that experience.

I finally decided that I didn’t want my fears of getting hurt again to interfere with my enjoyment of a sport I love. It’s like having to get back on the horse when you’ve fallen off. Now, I take the time to warm up plenty before I play and I haven’t thrown out my back since. Instead, when I’m out on a course playing, I stop sometime at each hole and take in a slow deep breath and worship God right there in the beauty of nature. I enjoy being enjoyed by God just being myself. I don’t let my fears of my back going out again keep me from doing what I enjoyed. Well, just some thoughts, for whatever they are worth.
