John the Baptist
It starts with a man named John the Baptist. John did not dress for success! Do you remember what John wore? He wore camel hair and a leather belt. His diet was a little odd. Wild honey and . . . locusts. He gave up everything for his ministry. He became very popular. People flocked to him.

And then one day, Jesus comes. John points to Him and says:

  • He`s the One. He`s the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. ''John 1:29''

Now everybody flocks to Jesus, and many of John the Baptist`s talmudin ''his disciples'' come to him and they say to him:

  • Rabbi. The man Jesus who was with you has begun baptizing and now everyone is going to Him. ''John 3:26''

They don`t like this, because their success factor is going down.

    John replies:

  • You yourselves can testify that I said, I`m not the Christ. I`m not the Messiah, but I`m sent ahead of him. The bride belongs to the Bridegroom. ''There is a beautiful image here.'' The friend who attends the Bridegroom waits and listens for him and is full of joy when he hears his voice. ''John 3: 28-29''

In a Jewish wedding, the friend of the Groom, like the Best Man in our weddings, had several jobs to do. After the wedding ceremony, the Bride would be led to a tent where it would be dark, and the friend of the Groom would stand outside the tent to guard the Bride. No one gets in to the Bride except the Groom. He would stop anyone else until the Groom came. Because it was dark, he would have to hear the voice of the Groom, and when he heard that voice, the friend would step aside, and the Groom would go in to the Bride.

    John says:

  • That`s my role. I`m not the Groom. The Bride doesn`t belong to me. If I do what you`re asking, and if I become envious and want to be the center of attention, and if I want to have Messianic greatness, I will lose my joy . . . that joy, the joy of the friend of the Groom. I can never have the joy that belongs to him. I`m not him. I`m just a servant. I`m not the whole show. The wedding is not about me. I`m just a friend. But I have a certain joy, and that is the joy of a friend. That joy is mine, and my joy is now complete.

And then comes this fabulous sentence:

  • He ''Jesus'' must become greater. I must become less. ''John 3:30''
