Jesus puts his baptism on the ground of meetness. Jesus himself answered this, "It becometh us to fulfill all righteousness." It was the most important thing for Jesus as the leader to enter by the same gate as the members of His specific vocation in the service of the Kingdom.

The standard answer is that God used John's baptism of Jesus as anointing him as Messiah. Unfortunately, water was never used for anointing -- olive oil was the liquid used (see Psalm 23).
