Why do you think Peter denied knowing Jesus?
Like all of us, he reached a point where lieing was preferable to punishment. He went back to old habits. He likely justified his lie with some reasoning to make himself feel better.

Peter`s heart
Heb 4:7 again he sets a certain day, Today, saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, Today, when you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. It`s easy to think that his heart was hardened but he was tehre all the time. I would say panic. Maybe he hoped he could do something. He denied but he was there. Where were the other disciples? Fear had hot hold of him and in fact Jesus rebukes him afterwards but he`s fully human and dares being there. Shows courage and is PRESENT. Like when he dared taking the steps in the water and the other disciples didn`t. he was afraid but trustful too. And that`s why he was chosen as the rock resting rooting in Christ. Makes you think of John leaping in Elisabeth womb - deep emotions are stirred by Jesus who became fully human and emotions are a large part of our genetic code. Isn`t his the Law of Love? aren`t we called to fight bad emotional instincts? with the help of Jesus the Weeder.

Why do you think Peter denied knowing Jesus?
Peter feared being killed by the high priests just like Jesus. Peter was told by Jesus that he would deny him three times before the rooster crows. Jesus` words have to be fulfilled as said from above.

Peter`s torn in his feelings. Denies Jesus but he follows him. When he realises his mistake he runs away in tears. His actiosn contrast his words. Maybe he is trying to do something? only God knows but he clearly repented. And was emotionally torn. Judas took a precise step. Very coolly. Calculating - thinking of the money and saving himself. Peter then stood by Jesus and accepted martyrdom.

Peter Disowns Jesus

They seized him, and led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. But Peter followed from a distance. When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard, and had sat down together, Peter sat among them. A certain servant girl saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, said, "This man also was with him."
He denied Jesus, saying, "Woman, I don't know him."
After a little while someone else saw him, and said, "You also are one of them!"
But Peter answered, "Man, I am not!"
After about one hour passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Truly this man also was with him, for he is a Galilean!"
But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. The Lord turned, and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the Lord's word, how he said to him, "Before the rooster crows you will deny me three times." He went out, and wept bitterly.
