Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Because he knew that if they answered him trutfull then they would know not to doubt him..

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Because Jesus knew what was in their hearts asking him about by what authority he did those things. So, he gave the Pharisees a chance to answer his question correctly but they didn`t by saying they didn`t know. That`s why Jesus said Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. Thank God for his loving kindness. Grace- showing love and kindness to someone who does not deserve it. The heart of the Bible`s message is God`s grace. He loves people and saves them even while they are still fighting against him. Amen!

Why do you think persons questioned the authority of Jesus, even though he showed his love through the mircales and preaching?

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Jesus was testing the Pharisees they seem not to understand God`s work even though he was preaching and teaching them. He showed them God`s work through baptism of John, yet they were in doubt. So he asked them a question to see if they really understood God`s work, yet they were at a loss.

Why did Jesus answer a question with a question, rather than just telling the Pharisees by what authority He acted?
Jesus was trying to show the Pharisees that the same authority was working through John the Baptist and Himself. By answering the questions directly, He would not be connecting Himself with John. He was trying to get the priests and elders to see the connection.

In truthfully answering Jesus` question, the Pharisees would have had the answer to their own question to Him.

In order for the prophecy to come true, Jesus spoke in a very indirect way. He was testing the chief priests and elders.

The Authority of Jesus Questioned

When he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?"
Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you one question, which if you tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from men?"
They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the multitude, for all hold John as a prophet." They answered Jesus, and said, "We don't know."
He also said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
