What was it about Jesus` answer that caused the Pharisees and Herodians to marvel?
The Pharasiees and Herodians were marveled by the fact the Jesus supported the payment of taxes to the Government. His teaching did not address the Government of man by man, but that of the Kingdom of God. While the Bible gives guidance in civil matters, such as the laws of retribution (eye for eye, tooth for tooth), Jesus came not to give new laws and commandments, but to fulfill the existing ones. While he was very forceful in throwing the tax collectors and merchants from the Synagouge, the collection of taxes, at the proper place, and in the proper manner is not to be considered a sin.

When you cheat your government you cheat on God
To often we do everthing we can to beat the taxation of our governments. Jesus said we must pay our far share of taxes as well as give to God what is owed him. Some persons stop at 10%. They do not understand that the 10 % is allready God,s it is any amount that we give above 10% that God will give back to us pressed down and running over

What was it about Jesus` answer that caused the Pharisees and Herodians to marvel?

The Herodians were a group that favored the dynasty of Herod and stood for the Roman connection. They cared little or nothing for religion and normally were bitterly opposed by the Pharisees. The Lord was put to a test. If Jesus had said yes, He can be help up to the people as a traitor. If He had said no, He can be denounced to the Roman authorities.

What was it about Jesus` answer that caused the Pharisees and Herodians to marvel?
They marveled because of what Jesus said, give what is Ceaser's to Ceaser and what belongs to God to God.  In other words because the Pharisees were false and hypocrites, God would not have wanted to know unless they repented and showed their true belief in Him.

Paying Taxes to Caesar

Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how they might entrap him in his talk. They sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are honest, and teach the way of God in truth, no matter who you teach, for you aren't partial to anyone. Tell us therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"
But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, "Why do you test me, you hypocrites? Show me the tax money."
They brought to him a denarius.
He asked them, "Whose is this image and inscription?"
They said to him, "Caesar's."
Then he said to them, "Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
When they heard it, they marveled, and left him, and went away.
